Lake Gardner Dam Repairs
Amesbury, MA

PARE performed a stability evaluation of the Lake Gardner Dam granite block overflow spillway after it was damaged by the floodwaters from heavy rains in October of 1996.  The damage endangered the stability of the structure and the Town of Amesbury was instructed to undertake emergency repairs in the field.  PARE performed the evaluation and submitted a report in support of a request for emergency funding from FEMA.

PARE designed mitigation measures to repair and stabilize the spillway.  The mitigation measures included the anchoring of the individual granite face blocks to the spillway; the anchoring of the spillway with rock anchors; and the installation of an anchored concrete scour pad along the toe of the spillway. PARE prepared contract plans and specifications to implement the repairs.

As part of this project, PARE obtained permits for construction from the MA Department of Environmental Management Office of Dam Safety, MA Department of Environmental Protection, and from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  The permitting phase included a Water Quality Certification and approval from the Massachusetts Historical Commission.

The repairs, which were completed in 2000, brought the 800-foot-long, 25-foot-high structure into compliance with current state dam safety regulations.
