University of Massachusetts Dartmouth - Cedar Dell Student Housing Renovations
Dartmouth, MA

Pare provided site/civil and structural engineering services for the renovations made to the Cedar Dell student housing on the Dartmouth Campus of the University of Massachusetts. This 804-bed townhouse complex had deteriorated to the point that it was declared uninhabitable and was out of service for two years.  The design/build team completed Phase I of the project—containing over 400 beds and student commons space and having a construction value in excess of $9  million—in just 19 weeks to meet the needs of returning fall semester students. Cedar Dell Phase II was then completed during the fall and following winter.  Pare also provided construction administration throughout the project.

Site improvements addressed drainage concerns throughout the site where ponding occurred on a frequent basis.  Drainage points were provided to alleviate localized flooding.  Swales were excavated and pitched with steeper slopes where possible to reduce standing water.  Traffic circles were redesigned to resemble a rain garden incorporating plantings, mulch, and raised inlets to provide some means of water quality treatment.

Exterior renovations included new roofs, new entry doors, structural repairs to existing framing, selected concrete stoop replacement & column support, site drainage improvements, and landscaping.
