Cathedral Square Feasibility Study
Providence, RI

Cathedral Square in Providence, RI was historically a focal point where several major thoroughfares converged in front of the stately Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul.  In the mid-1960s, the area was converted to a pedestrian mall and Interstate 95 was constructed adjacent to the site, effectively isolating the site from the neighborhoods to the west and the "downcity" area to the east.

The Cathedral Square Feasibility Study is the culmination of previous recommendations to reconnect the street network.  Project stakeholders desired to reconnect Cathedral Square to its surroundings and make it a vital, well-used center of a mixed-income/mixed-use neighborhood.  Another goal was to identify potential sites for mixed-use development, including affordable housing.

The Pare Project Team developed base mapping of the project area, reviewed previous studies and recommendations, and conducted three stakeholder meetings which involved City Planning, Parks, and Public Works representatives; state transportation officials; property owners, residents and businesses; and representatives of neighborhood groups. Throughout the study process, Pare, with its landscape architectural subconsultant, Bradford Associates, prepared extensive graphics—including maps, site plans, 3-D visual models, and renderings— and developed several alternatives for redevelopment of the area.
