Newport Trolley Study
Newport, RI

The Newport County Chamber of Commerce contracted PARE to provide conceptual design assistance for a seasonal trolley to reduce traffic congestion, improve air quality, and improve visitor experience in Newport.  This seasonal service would extend from the Newport Gateway Visitors Center south along America’s Cup Avenue and west on Memorial Boulevard to the Atlantic Beach Club area of Middletown, in part replicating the historic trolley line.

For the concept report and subsequent public presentation, PARE documented existing conditions including current public transit services, roadway capabilities, right-of-ways, parking conditions, destinations, and traffic volumes.  PARE then developed route layout options and created graphics for some of the options and typical sections consisting of renderings depicting sidewalk widths, curbing, shoulder widths, parking lanes, lane widths for motorists/trolleys and preliminary landscape architectural details.  The final memo/presentation also included case studies from seasonal trolley services in other cities across the country, challenges that would need to be addressed, and the “next steps” that would be necessary to implement the selected alternatives.
