ExxonMobil South Berth Dock Repairs
East Providence, RI

Based upon the results of a condition survey performed for approximately 650 linear feet of steel sheetpile bulkhead, ExxonMobil Corporation retained Pare to develop plans and specifications for the South Berth Dock Repairs Project. The South Berth serves as ExxonMobil’s prime off-loading facility to service the East Providence Terminal, a major storage and transfer facility for a variety of petroleum products for the New England area. The South Berth Dock consists of a steel sheet pile bulkhead installed on the waterside of a timber pile-supported granite block quay wall. Ancillary structures include two breasting dolphins, as well as a loading platform and associated fire suppression facilities. Pare was responsible for preparing final design plans and specifications for the needed repairs. Pare's services included the preparation of cost estimates, and construction-phase services.

Nine inclinometers were installed through the existing granite block quay wall and ten strain gauges were installed on selected tie rods. Pare has continually monitored the instruments on a periodic basis to determine if displacements are occurring behind the rehabilitated bulkhead and within the granite quay wall that served as the former wharf face.
