The City of Woonsocket, RI contracted with Pare for the design and construction of five new water storage facilities. Pare completed the siting evaluation reports for these facilities and all site/civil, geotechnical, electrical, and mechanical engineering, as well as providing construction observation. Pare also performed an extensive hydraulic modeling effort to evaluate system hydraulics and system water quality parameters, including chlorine decay.
The first tank to be constructed was a new 3-MG ground storage reservoir which replaced one of the City’s low-service storage facilities that was demolished. The new tank implemented Woonsocket’s first interior mixing system to improve disinfection mixing and circulation. Construction at the 2.2-acre tank farm site was complicated by the phased demolition of existing water storage facilities and a radio transmission tower, while maintaining enough room for two additional tanks to be constructed at the site—a 1.5-million-gallon ground storage reservoir and a 750,000-gallon elevated steel tank, which included the design of an interior high-service booster pump station. Site remediation associated with lead-impacted soils (due to paint used over the years on the previous steel standpipe) was performed on the site where the elevated tank was constructed.
A fourth facility, a new 1-MG above-ground prestressed concrete storage tank referred to as the Cobble Hill Tank, was designed by Pare for a separate site in the City. Pare also designed a new 750,000-gallon steel elevated tank located in the Rhodes Avenue high-service district. This tank replaced a 250,000-gallon elevated tank, which was demolished concurrently with the final remediation of lead-impacted soils at the site.
