Pare Corporation provided engineering services for two new elementary schools, Hosmer Elementary and Cunniff Elementary, in Watertown, Massachusetts. Hosmer Elementary School is a 143,000-sq.ft., 3-story building and Cunniff Elementary School is an 82,000-sq.ft., 2-story building. Both schools have similar spaces including science, art, and general classrooms; media centers; gymnasiums; student dining areas; and learning commons.
Pare provided structural engineering services for the project. Structural systems consisted of a steel superstructure utilizing braced frames with shallow foundations. Pare worked collaboratively with the Architect to determine brace locations and developed creative brace orientations to maintain architectural layouts. Pare also provided structural designs for several solar canopies located along the parking and walkway areas of both buildings to provide additional solar array space for net-zero efficiency.
The structural design for Hosmer Elementary School included a glass-clad bridge structure connecting two wings of the building. This bridge structure incorporated multi-story steel trusses to provide a narrow and open floor structure.
As part of the feasibility stage of the project, which also involved a third elementary school, Pare provided traffic, pedestrian, and circulation studies.
